Rebecca Smyth,
Product Designer
I completed my BA Sustainable Product Design Degree at Falmouth University in 2017 where I first became interested in inclusive design and realised that there was a lot that could be done better in the disability market. I am now following my dreams to design and concentrate on bringing new products to market with a strong focus on helping people that have difficulties with daily tasks. I have my own health battles that make me more determined to push my designs out to help others wherever I can.
I have developed the KIT HandyGrip™ to assist and improve people’s grip on everyday items. It is a gel-like strip that has been thoroughly tested and is especially designed and formulated to wrap around objects such as knives, forks and other cutlery, glasses, tools and many other everyday items where people experience difficulty in gripping, or need an area on an item to conform for a better fit in the hand and be more ergonomic. I have also worked alongside an Occupational Therapist from the Royal Cornwall Hospital during my HCD research and development to gain more information on developing my products to better understand the needs of end-users.
“A brilliant solution to the wrong problem can be worse than
no solution at all: solve the correct problem.”
― Donald. A. Norman, The Design of Everyday Things
The KIT HandyGrip™ does just this whilst many designs today focus on being all about the slick-shiny look, rather than how it might work best. By adding the KIT HandyGrip™ to these items, one can gain the much needed grip and solve some frustrating daily challenges.
The KIT HandyGrip™ can be easily removed and applied to different items. It can also be washed in warm, soapy water to easily regain its former stickiness.
